When you can't communicate, it is really frustrating and limiting.
I get it...

Even though I was born in Italy, I never learned to speak Italian. My parents are both Americans and we returned to the states when I was three years old. I LOVE Italy. I have visited several times and my husband speaks fluent Italian - thank goodness! We took our family on a 3-month adventure to Italy.

It was amazing and also difficult. I enjoy the beauty, history, culture, and food but not being able to speak the language limited my ability to function in the community. I went to the grocery store and hoped that no one would try to talk to me. I learned the basic and most helpful phrase "Non parlo Italiano" just in case someone did try to communicate with me. I was totally reliant on my husband, and I felt isolated and frustrated. Our family took Italian language lessons and experienced the learning process of practicing, making mistakes, and trying again. It takes courage and persistence to learn a new language. I understand.
